Short answer

Can I get online care for fatty liver in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Told you have fatty liver or raised liver enzymes? A clinician reviews your labs, imaging and risk, and plans next steps with you. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. If labs are needed, your clinician usually orders the Essential Blood Work (Blood count, metabolic panel, cholesterol and A1c), $59, through Passion Health Blood Work, drawn at a Passion Health clinic or any CPL patient service center in Texas; with insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you've been told you have cirrhosis or advanced liver scarring, you need an in-person visit within a few days instead, and you don't pay the online fee. Already a Passion Health patient with insurance? We book you with your own clinician instead.

About the condition

What to know about fatty liver

Fatty liver means extra fat has built up in your liver. Doctors now often call the most common type MASLD, short for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. It is linked to extra weight, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and heavy drinking can cause it too. Most people have no symptoms for years.

How is fatty liver checked?

Fatty liver is often found by chance on an ultrasound or a routine blood test. To see whether it is causing scarring (fibrosis), your clinician may first calculate a score from simple blood tests and, if that score isn't low, recommend a painless liver stiffness scan. Most people never need a liver biopsy.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • An ultrasound or CT scan showed fatty liver and you want to know what it means
  • Your liver enzymes (ALT or AST) were mildly raised on a routine blood test
  • You have diabetes, prediabetes or extra weight and want your liver risk checked
  • You want a plan for weight, food, alcohol and follow-up testing

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • You've been told you have cirrhosis or advanced liver scarring Within days
  • Losing more than 10 lb without trying Within days

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • Yellow skin or yellowing of the whites of your eyes
  • Vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Black, tarry or maroon stools
  • New confusion, extreme sleepiness, or being unusually hard to wake
  • Your belly is swelling or getting bigger quickly
  • Severe or worsening belly pain
  • A swollen belly with confusion
  • Vomiting with no stool or gas passing

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

Already a Passion Health patient?

If Passion Health is your primary care practice and you have insurance, book this with your own clinician — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan, not just this one problem. Online fatty liver care is for new patients, uninsured patients and patients outside Dallas–Fort Worth; established patients without insurance pay the $39 renewal rate.

How it works

How your fatty liver visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the fatty liver intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • Reviewing your imaging, liver blood tests, weight, diabetes and alcohol use
  • Blood tests such as liver enzymes, a blood count, A1c and cholesterol, and a fibrosis score calculated from them
  • A Liver Health Assessment to measure liver stiffness and fat at our Frisco clinic, if your score suggests you need one, or, if you live farther away, a liver stiffness scan at an imaging center near you, which your clinician can order
  • Tests for other liver causes, such as hepatitis B and C, when appropriate
  • A plan for gradual weight loss, food, exercise and alcohol, plus treatment of related conditions such as diabetes

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends a Liver Health Assessment to check for liver stiffness and fat, you can have it at our Frisco clinic, or, if you live farther away, your clinician can refer you to an imaging center near you for a liver stiffness scan.
  • If your clinician recommends liver blood tests, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas.
  • If your clinician recommends medical weight management and you meet program criteria, you can join Passion Health WeightCare.
Price & insurance

How much does an online fatty liver visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs your clinician orders are priced through Passion Health Blood Work if you self-pay, or billed to your plan directly by the lab (CPL) if you use insurance; imaging is billed by the imaging center and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

Your clinician will suggest when to repeat your liver blood tests and fibrosis check, often every 1 to 3 years when risk is low and sooner when it's higher.

Labs your clinician may order

Priced through Passion Health Blood Work

Liver enzymes, platelets (for the FIB-4 score), cholesterol and A1c in one panel. Ordered only if your clinician decides it's needed — the visit price never includes a test you don't need.

All Blood Work tests
Essential Blood WorkBlood count, metabolic panel, cholesterol and A1c (33 results)$59

Typical self-pay total: $89 visit + $59 labs = $148

Self-pay prices are billed by Passion Health. If you use insurance — including Medicare and Medicaid — the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly for the tests under your plan's lab benefits, and the prices above don't apply. Blood is drawn at a Passion Health clinic in North Texas or at any CPL patient service center in Texas; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Questions

Questions about fatty liver care

How much does an online fatty liver visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For fatty liver, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

I'm already a Passion Health patient. Can I use this?

If you have insurance, we'll book you with your own Passion Health clinician instead — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan. If you're an established patient without insurance, continuing a treatment we already prescribed uses the $39 follow-up rate; a new problem uses this page's price.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, they're priced through Passion Health Blood Work: for fatty liver that's usually the Essential Blood Work (Blood count, metabolic panel, cholesterol and A1c), $59, through Passion Health Blood Work (self-pay prices, billed by Passion Health). If you use insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly and those prices don't apply. You can have blood drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth or walk into any CPL patient service center in Texas with a photo ID; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Can fatty liver be treated?

Yes. For most people the main treatment is gradual weight loss: losing 5 to 10% of body weight can reduce liver fat and, at the higher end, inflammation and scarring. Managing diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure and limiting alcohol also help. For some people with scarring, prescription medicines are now an option, and your clinician can discuss whether one fits.

Do I need to stop drinking alcohol completely?

Alcohol adds to liver damage, and no amount has been proven safe for a fatty liver. If you have liver scarring, your clinician will usually advise stopping completely. Otherwise, they'll talk with you about how much you drink, using the short alcohol questionnaire in your intake, and agree on a plan to cut back or stop. If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly on your own, because alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. If your answers show heavy drinking, your clinician will call you before your plan is sent to talk through a safe way to cut down, including medicines that can help.

I'm already a Passion Health patient with fatty liver. Should I book here?

Online fatty liver care is set up mainly for new patients, people without insurance, and Texans outside DFW. If Passion Health is your primary care practice and you have insurance, the intake will guide you to book with your own clinician, in person or by video, billed as a normal visit. Your clinician can recommend a Liver Health Assessment from there.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
