Short answer

Can I get a sleep apnea evaluation online in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Loud snoring, gasping at night, or tired all day? A clinician reviews your sleep screening and, if it points to sleep apnea, refers you for a sleep study through a sleep center. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. Labs, if needed, can be drawn at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you've fallen asleep, or nearly fallen asleep, while driving, you need to be seen in person today instead (at our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics, or urgent care near you), and you don't pay the online fee.

About the condition

What to know about sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea happens when your airway narrows or closes again and again during sleep, briefly stopping your breathing. It causes loud snoring, gasping, and daytime sleepiness. It is more common in men, people carrying extra weight, and women after menopause. Untreated, it raises the risk of high blood pressure, heart problems, and drowsy-driving crashes.

Is snoring a sign of sleep apnea?

Snoring is common and often harmless, but loud snoring with pauses in breathing, gasping, or daytime sleepiness can point to sleep apnea. Alcohol near bedtime, a stuffy nose, sleeping on your back, and weight gain can all make snoring worse. A bed partner's description of what they hear and see is one of the most useful clues your clinician can have.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • Loud snoring, or someone has seen you stop breathing or gasp in your sleep
  • Daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or waking up unrefreshed
  • You want to know whether you need a sleep study, at home or in a sleep lab
  • You were diagnosed before and want a CPAP follow-up

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • You've fallen asleep, or nearly fallen asleep, while driving Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call 911

  • Pauses in your breathing at night along with chest pain
  • Severe shortness of breath, at night or during the day

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

How it works

How your sleep apnea visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the sleep apnea intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A review of your sleep screening scores, what others have noticed, and your blood pressure and weight
  • A referral to a sleep center for a sleep study, at home or in a sleep lab, if your symptoms and scores point to it
  • An in-lab study rather than a home test if you have heart failure, COPD or another significant lung disease, a nerve or muscle disease, or a past stroke, take daily opioid pain medicine, or have severe insomnia
  • If sleep apnea is confirmed, treatment options such as CPAP, an oral appliance made by a dentist, or sleep-position changes
  • Steps that may reduce snoring, such as less alcohol near bedtime, treating a stuffy nose, and weight support

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician orders labs, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic, or at any CPL patient service center in Texas. Self-pay labs are priced through Passion Health Blood Work, or billed to your insurance.
  • If your clinician recommends a sleep study, they refer you to a sleep center, which arranges a home test or an in-lab study and bills it separately.

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs and imaging, if needed, are billed separately, and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

After your sleep study, your clinician reviews the results with you and plans next steps. If you start CPAP, a check-in in the first few months looks at how well it fits and how you feel.

Questions

Questions about sleep apnea care

How much does an online sleep apnea visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For sleep apnea, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth, or at any CPL patient service center in Texas. With insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. Self-pay tests that are in the Passion Health Blood Work catalog are billed at Blood Work prices; tests that aren't are billed by the lab (CPL) at its self-pay prices, and we give you an estimate before you go. Your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

How does a sleep study work?

Your clinician refers you to a sleep center. For many adults with likely moderate to severe sleep apnea, the center provides a small sensor kit you wear at home for one night; it records your breathing, oxygen level and heart rate. Others need an overnight study in a sleep lab. A physician at the sleep center reads the results, and your Passion Health clinician explains them and plans treatment.

Can I get a CPAP machine without a sleep test?

In the U.S., a CPAP machine needs a prescription, and most insurance plans require a sleep test first. Testing also matters for your care: it shows how severe your sleep apnea is and helps set the right treatment. A small number of people have a different type of sleep apnea that needs a different approach, and a test can reveal that.

Does losing weight help sleep apnea?

For many people, yes. Losing weight can reduce the number of breathing pauses each night, and for some people it makes a large difference. It usually works alongside treatment such as CPAP rather than replacing it at first. Your clinician can talk with you about weight support options while you treat the sleep apnea itself.

How is a sleep study billed, and where would CPAP come from?

The sleep center bills the study separately from your online visit, to your insurance or as a self-pay charge. Some plans need approval first; if you pay yourself, ask the sleep center for a written Good Faith Estimate. If CPAP is prescribed, it comes from a medical-equipment supplier, not a pharmacy, and most plans cover it only after a sleep test confirms sleep apnea.

Can I test myself for sleep apnea at home?

Not on your own: a home sleep apnea test has to be ordered and read by a clinician. After your online evaluation, if your symptoms and screening scores point to sleep apnea, your Passion Health clinician refers you to a sleep center, which arranges a home test or an in-lab study, and then reviews the result with you. Over-the-counter apps and watches can flag a risk but can't diagnose sleep apnea or get you treatment.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
