Short answer

Can I get online care for adrenal insufficiency in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Already diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency? A clinician reviews your steroid plan, sick-day rules and labs, and coordinates with endocrinology. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. If labs are needed, your clinician usually orders Comprehensive metabolic panel, $41 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus plasma renin, billed by the lab), drawn at a Passion Health clinic or any CPL patient service center in Texas; with insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you have a fever or are sick right now (take your sick-day dose now, as your plan says), you need to be seen in person today instead (at our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics, or urgent care near you), and you don't pay the online fee. Already a Passion Health patient with insurance? We book you with your own clinician instead.

About the condition

What to know about adrenal insufficiency

Adrenal insufficiency means your adrenal glands don't make enough cortisol, a hormone your body needs to handle stress and illness and to keep your blood pressure steady. It can come from damage to the adrenal glands (Addison's disease), a pituitary problem, or stopping long-term steroid medicine. It causes tiredness, weakness, nausea and dizziness, and needs daily hormone replacement.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • You've been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency and need a treatment review or refill
  • You want to review your sick-day (stress-dose) rules
  • You need to update your emergency injection plan
  • You'd like lab follow-up and coordination with your endocrinologist

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • You have a fever or are sick right now (take your sick-day dose now, as your plan says) Same day
  • You haven't been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency but think you might have it Within days
  • A lump in your neck that is growing quickly Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call 911

  • Vomiting or diarrhea and you can't keep your steroid tablets down (use your emergency injection now if you have one)
  • Feeling faint, very weak or dizzy when you stand, or a blood pressure reading with a top number under 90
  • Severe belly, back or leg pain with weakness or vomiting
  • Unusual drowsiness or confusion, or someone says you're not acting like yourself
  • Blood sugar under 70 that won't come up with treatment
  • A known adrenal problem with vomiting, very low blood pressure or confusion

Emergency room now

  • Blood sugar over 300 with ketones, vomiting, belly pain or fast breathing
  • A known thyroid problem with fever, racing heart and agitation

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

Already a Passion Health patient?

If Passion Health is your primary care practice and you have insurance, book this with your own clinician — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan, not just this one problem. Online adrenal insufficiency care is for new patients, uninsured patients and patients outside Dallas–Fort Worth; established patients without insurance pay the $39 renewal rate.

How it works

How your adrenal insufficiency visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the adrenal insufficiency intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A review of your diagnosis, your current replacement dose and timing, and signs of too much or too little. We refill your current dose and review your sick-day plan; we don't change your daily dose from an online form, and changes are made at a video visit with your endocrinologist's input
  • Sick-day rules: when and how much to raise your dose, written down for you
  • An emergency injection kit plan, a medical alert ID, and a letter for travel or emergencies, if appropriate
  • Blood tests such as electrolytes, and plasma renin if you take fludrocortisone, if appropriate. Cortisol and ACTH are tests for diagnosis and aren't used to adjust your dose
  • A referral to an endocrinologist if your plan needs a specialist's input (our specialist eConsult service is coming soon)

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends blood tests such as electrolytes, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas.
Price & insurance

How much does an online adrenal insufficiency visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs your clinician orders are priced through Passion Health Blood Work if you self-pay, or billed to your plan directly by the lab (CPL) if you use insurance; imaging is billed by the imaging center and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

Review your sick-day plan at least once a year, and again after any adrenal crisis, hospital stay or dose change. 30 days of messaging.

Labs your clinician may order

Priced through Passion Health Blood Work

Electrolytes are on Blood Work. Plasma renin, if you take fludrocortisone, is run and billed by the lab. Cortisol and ACTH are diagnostic tests and aren't used to adjust your dose. Ordered only if your clinician decides it's needed — the visit price never includes a test you don't need.

All Blood Work tests
Comprehensive metabolic panelGlucose, kidney, liver, electrolytes (14 results)$12
Draw and clinician-review fee One per order of single tests; not charged when the order includes a Blood Work bundle$29

Typical self-pay total for the Blood Work tests above: $89 visit + $41 labs = $130

Not included in this total: Plasma renin (if you take fludrocortisone), when needed — run and billed separately by the lab, or to your plan.

Self-pay prices are billed by Passion Health. If you use insurance — including Medicare and Medicaid — the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly for the tests under your plan's lab benefits, and the prices above don't apply. Blood is drawn at a Passion Health clinic in North Texas or at any CPL patient service center in Texas; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Questions

Questions about adrenal insufficiency care

How much does an online adrenal insufficiency visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For adrenal insufficiency, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

I'm already a Passion Health patient. Can I use this?

If you have insurance, we'll book you with your own Passion Health clinician instead — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan. If you're an established patient without insurance, continuing a treatment we already prescribed uses the $39 follow-up rate; a new problem uses this page's price.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, they're priced through Passion Health Blood Work: for adrenal insufficiency that's usually Comprehensive metabolic panel, $41 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus plasma renin, billed by the lab) (self-pay prices, billed by Passion Health). If you use insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly and those prices don't apply. You can have blood drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth or walk into any CPL patient service center in Texas with a photo ID; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

What are sick-day rules?

Sick-day rules tell you how to raise your steroid dose when your body is under stress, such as a fever, infection, injury or surgery, because you can't make extra cortisol on your own. If you get sick, take your sick-day dose right away, as your plan says: often double your usual dose for a fever over 100.4°F (38°C), and triple it for a fever over 102.2°F (39°C). If you're vomiting, can't keep tablets down, or feel faint or confused, use your emergency injection and call 911. Then get seen the same day, at a Passion Health clinic or the nearest urgent care or emergency room. Your clinician writes down your own plan for you.

Can a new adrenal insufficiency diagnosis be made online?

No. Diagnosing adrenal insufficiency needs carefully timed blood tests and an in-person evaluation. This page is for people already diagnosed. If you think you might have it — for example, ongoing tiredness, weight loss, salt craving, dizziness or darkening skin — book an in-person visit with a Passion Health clinician.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
