Short answer

Can I get online care for trichotillomania in Texas?

Yes, by live video, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Pulling out your hair and finding it hard to stop? Talk privately by live video with a clinician about what drives it and what helps. A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician meets you on live video (Passion Health sees every mental-health visit by video), uses validated screening tools and builds a written plan with you. The flat price is $129, or use insurance. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you eat the hair you pull and have belly pain, vomiting, or feel full after a few bites, you need to be seen in person today instead (at our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics, or urgent care near you), and you don't pay the online fee.

About the condition

What to know about trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a condition in which you repeatedly pull out your own hair — from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes or elsewhere — and find it hard to stop. It's a body-focused repetitive behavior, related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. It often starts in the teen years, is more common in women, and can be linked to stress, boredom or anxiety.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • You pull out your hair and want to stop or cut back
  • Pulling has caused bald patches or thin areas that bother you
  • You also pick your skin or bite your nails
  • You'd like a referral for behavior therapy and a check for anxiety or depression
  • You can join a live video visit from a private place in Texas

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • You eat the hair you pull and have belly pain, vomiting, or feel full after a few bites Same day
  • Skin where you pull is red, hot, swollen or oozing, with fever Same day
  • Several days of very high energy with little need for sleep Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call or text 988

  • Right now, thoughts of ending your life or a plan to, or you've hurt yourself on purpose in the past few days

Emergency room now

  • Hearing or seeing things others don't, or feeling others are out to get you
  • Shaking, sweating or confusion after stopping alcohol or drugs
  • You are drunk or high right now

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

    A written care plan

  4. 4

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A live video visit to understand your pulling patterns, triggers and how it affects your life
  • Screening for anxiety, depression and related conditions such as skin picking or OCD
  • A referral for behavior therapy — habit reversal training or cognitive behavioral therapy — the main treatment
  • Medicine in some cases, if appropriate, especially when anxiety or depression is also present
  • A check of hair or skin damage, and a dermatology referral if needed

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends behavior therapy, they can refer you to a behavioral health provider who treats hair pulling.

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs and imaging, if needed, are billed separately, and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

Check-in 1–2 weeks after any medication start or change, then on a schedule that fits your plan; 90 days of messaging.

Questions

Questions about trichotillomania care

How much does an online trichotillomania visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $129 for a comprehensive evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Why is this a video visit?

Because Passion Health sees every mental-health visit by live video: a live conversation is the safest way to do these visits online, and it lets the clinician use validated screening tools and build the plan with you. That is our policy, not a Texas legal requirement.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Is trichotillomania a mental health condition?

Yes. It's grouped with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders and is known as a body-focused repetitive behavior. It isn't a bad habit you can simply stop with willpower, and it's more common than many people think — roughly 1 to 2 in 100 adults. Effective help exists, mainly through a type of behavior therapy.

What happens at the video visit?

Your clinician talks with you face to face about when and where you pull, what you've tried, and how you're feeling overall. Together you plan behavior therapy and, if it fits, any medicine. Passion Health provides all mental-health care, including this, by live video rather than an online form.

If my clinician suggests a medicine, are there extra cautions?

Some people with hair pulling are offered an antidepressant, especially when anxiety or depression is also present. Antidepressants carry an FDA boxed warning: in people under 25, they can increase suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially in the first weeks or after a dose change, so if you're 18 to 24, your clinician checks in within about a week of starting or changing a dose. At any age, tell your clinician right away about new or worse mood changes, agitation or trouble sleeping. If you have thoughts of suicide, call or text 988, or call 911 if you're in danger.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship by live video when the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007; 22 TAC §175.2). Seeing every mental-health visit by live video is Passion Health's policy. So is our rule that controlled medicines are never prescribed or renewed through Online Care; if one is ever considered, that decision is made only at an in-person visit with a Passion Health physician.
