Short answer

Can I get a dermatologist's advice online in Texas?

Not yet. When it launches, this will be an eConsult: your Passion Health clinician asks a dermatologist for written advice. You won't have a visit with the dermatologist, and they won't take over your care. Until then, a Passion Health clinician can see you in person in Dallas–Fort Worth, usually the same day; elsewhere in Texas, ask your own clinician about a specialist referral. If you have a mole or spot that is new, changing in size, shape or color, itching or bleeding, you need an in-person visit within a few days instead.

About the condition

What to know about dermatology input

Dermatology is the medical specialty for skin, hair and nails. People often want a dermatologist's view for a rash that keeps coming back, acne or psoriasis that hasn't responded to treatment, or nail and scalp problems. When this service launches, a dermatologist will advise your Passion Health clinician in writing, using your photos and history.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

What this service will cover

  • A rash, eczema or psoriasis that hasn't improved with treatment you've already tried
  • Acne, rosacea or skin-color changes where you'd like a specialist's view on next steps
  • Scalp, hair or nail problems that clear photos can show
  • A skin question where your clinician wants a dermatologist's advice before changing your plan

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • A mole or spot that is new, changing in size, shape or color, itching or bleeding Within days
  • A sore or bump that hasn't healed in 4 weeks Within days
  • A painful, swollen lump with pus (a possible abscess) Same day
  • You need a biopsy, a mole removed, or another skin procedure Within days
  • Redness that is spreading fast Same day
  • A rash on or around your eye Same day
  • Swelling of your face or eyelids, without trouble breathing Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call 911

  • Swelling of your lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing

Emergency room now

  • A rash with fever, and you feel very unwell
  • Widespread blistering or peeling skin, or sores in your mouth or eyes
  • Skin that is turning dark purple or black

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

How specialist input works

A Passion Health clinician evaluates you — online or by video — and stays responsible for your care. With your written consent, they send your history, results and your question to a specialist, who replies with written advice, usually within a few days. The specialist advises your clinician; they don't see you or take over your care. If they think you need to be seen in person, your clinician arranges a referral. How it will be billed is shown here before it opens.

How it works

How your visit works

    Upload labs, imaging and letters.

  2. 2
A Passion Health clinician evaluates you

Online or by video — they're responsible for your care.

  3. 3
    Specialist input, with your consent

Your clinician asks a specialist for written advice. The specialist does not see you.

  4. 4

Your clinician walks you through the advice and next steps.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A Passion Health clinician reviews your photos and history and decides whether a dermatologist's input will help, or whether they can treat you directly.
  • With your consent, your clinician sends your photos and a written question to a dermatologist through a secure eConsult. The dermatologist advises your clinician and does not meet or examine you.
  • Next steps your clinician may discuss: a prescription-strength skin medicine, a change to a current treatment, or lab tests, if appropriate.
  • An in-person skin exam, biopsy or procedure if the dermatologist advises one.

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

  • The price will be shown here before it opens

Specialist input isn't bookable yet. How it will be billed, including with insurance, is shown here before it opens. Until then, you can be seen in person at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth, billed like any clinic visit, or, elsewhere in Texas, ask your own clinician about a specialist referral.

Labs and imaging, if needed, are billed separately, and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

Your clinician messages you when the dermatologist's advice comes back and explains your plan, including any in-person visit you may need.

Questions

Questions about specialist input

How much does specialist input cost?

Specialist input isn't bookable yet. Its price, and whether the specialist's written advice is included, will be shown here before it opens. Until then, a Passion Health clinician can see you in person in Dallas–Fort Worth, billed like any clinic visit; elsewhere in Texas, ask your own clinician about a specialist referral.

Does the specialist see me?

No. A Passion Health clinician evaluates you and stays responsible for your care. With your consent, they send your history, results and question to a specialist, who replies with written advice — usually within a few days. If the specialist thinks you need to be seen in person, your clinician arranges a referral.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Will I see a dermatologist online?

No. When this service launches, a dermatologist will give advice, but not directly to you. Your Passion Health clinician evaluates your skin from your photos and history and, with your consent, sends the photos and a question to a dermatologist, who writes back with advice for your clinician. The dermatologist doesn't meet, examine or treat you, and doesn't take over your care. Your clinician explains the advice and manages your care. With insurance, your plan may apply a copay or deductible.

Can I get a mole checked or isotretinoin this way?

No. A changing mole or a sore that won't heal needs an in-person skin exam, and sometimes a biopsy, so we'll help you book a clinic visit (or, if you're not near one of our clinics, we tell you where to be seen near you). Isotretinoin is not prescribed through Passion Health online care. If your clinician thinks it may be right for you, they can refer you to a dermatologist in person.

The Texas law behind this visit

Your Passion Health clinician forms the patient relationship and stays responsible for your care (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005, §111.007). The specialist gives written advice to that clinician with your documented consent and does not see you.
