Short answer

Can I get STD testing online in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Private STD testing that starts online. A clinician reviews your exposure and symptoms, orders tests that fit your situation, and explains results and next steps. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. If labs are needed, your clinician usually orders HIV antigen/antibody, $57 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT, syphilis, trichomonas, billed by the lab), drawn at a Passion Health clinic or any CPL patient service center in Texas; with insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you have pain in your lower belly or pelvis, or new pain during sex, with or without fever, you need to be seen in person today instead (at our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics, or urgent care near you), and you don't pay the online fee.

About the condition

What to know about STD testing

STD testing checks for sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and trichomoniasis. Many cause no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know. CDC recommends testing based on your age, partners, and pregnancy, and after a new partner or possible exposure. You start online, then give samples at a lab near you.

Should I get an HIV test?

CDC recommends that everyone ages 13 to 64 get tested for HIV at least once, and people at higher risk at least once a year. A lab blood test can usually detect HIV within about 6 weeks of exposure, and your clinician will tell you if a repeat test is needed. If you're HIV-negative and at ongoing risk, ask about PrEP.

Why is syphilis testing recommended?

Syphilis has risen sharply in Texas and across the U.S., including in newborns. It often starts as a painless sore that's easy to miss, and later can cause a rash on the palms or soles. A blood test finds it. Early syphilis can be treated, usually with a penicillin injection at a short in-person visit.

Do I need a test for ureaplasma or mycoplasma?

Ureaplasma lives harmlessly in many healthy people, so routine testing isn't recommended. Your clinician may test for it, or for Mycoplasma genitalium, only when you have ongoing symptoms such as discharge or burning and standard tests are negative. Treating it when you have no symptoms isn't recommended.

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • Possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours — you may need PEP, which must start fast: go to an emergency room now
  • Pain or swelling in a testicle, especially if it started suddenly
  • You were sexually assaulted. Go to an emergency room for a sexual assault (SANE) exam and medicine to prevent infection; 24/7 support: 800-656-4673
  • A severe headache, a stiff neck, or new confusion
  • You can't urinate at all
  • Pregnant, with pelvic pain or bleeding

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

How it works

How your STD testing visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the STD testing intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A review of your symptoms, exposure timing, and partners to choose the right tests and the right time to test
  • Urine or swab tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and blood tests for HIV and syphilis — plus hepatitis or trichomoniasis tests when they fit your risk
  • Treatment if a test is positive and treatment is appropriate: pills sent to your pharmacy for infections such as chlamydia or trichomoniasis. Syphilis and gonorrhea are usually treated with an injection, so your clinician arranges a short in-person visit — at a Passion Health clinic or near you. If an HIV test is positive, we confirm it and connect you with HIV care quickly
  • Advice on telling partners and on when to retest
  • An in-person visit if you have sores, a rash, or pain that needs an exam — the same day for pain or fever — at a Passion Health clinic or near you

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends testing, you can give urine, swab, or blood samples at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas.
Price & insurance

How much does an online STD testing visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs your clinician orders are priced through Passion Health Blood Work if you self-pay, or billed to your plan directly by the lab (CPL) if you use insurance; imaging is billed by the imaging center and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

Your clinician gives you your results and explains them. If a test is positive, your clinician talks with you about treatment, telling partners, and when to retest — often about 3 months later for chlamydia and gonorrhea.

Labs your clinician may order

Priced through Passion Health Blood Work

HIV testing is priced through Passion Health Blood Work. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and trichomonas tests are run and billed by the lab. Ordered only if your clinician decides it's needed — the visit price never includes a test you don't need.

All Blood Work tests
HIV antigen/antibodyScreens for HIV infection$28
Draw and clinician-review fee One per order of single tests; not charged when the order includes a Blood Work bundle$29

Typical self-pay total for the Blood Work tests above: $89 visit + $57 labs = $146

Not included in this total: Chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT (urine or swab), Syphilis (RPR), Trichomonas, when needed — run and billed separately by the lab, or to your plan.

Self-pay prices are billed by Passion Health. If you use insurance — including Medicare and Medicaid — the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly for the tests under your plan's lab benefits, and the prices above don't apply. Blood is drawn at a Passion Health clinic in North Texas or at any CPL patient service center in Texas; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Questions

Questions about STD testing care

How much does an online STD testing visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For STD testing, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, they're priced through Passion Health Blood Work: for STD testing that's usually HIV antigen/antibody, $57 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT, syphilis, trichomonas, billed by the lab) (self-pay prices, billed by Passion Health). If you use insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly and those prices don't apply. You can have blood drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth or walk into any CPL patient service center in Texas with a photo ID; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Where can I get an STD test near me?

Start online from anywhere in Texas. After your clinician reviews your intake, you can give samples at any of our Passion Health clinics in Dallas–Fort Worth, or at a CPL location near you elsewhere in Texas. Lab fees are billed separately from the visit, and your clinician gives you your results privately.

How soon after sex should I get tested?

It depends on the infection. Chlamydia and gonorrhea tests are usually reliable about 1 to 2 weeks after exposure. Syphilis and HIV blood tests can take 6 weeks or longer to turn positive, so your clinician may suggest testing now and again later. If the exposure was in the last 72 hours and HIV is possible, get same-day care for PEP.

Is online STD testing private?

Yes, with limits you should know about. Your visit, results and records are protected health information, and your clinician gives you your results privately. Texas law requires some positive results, such as syphilis, HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea, to be reported confidentially to public health. If you use insurance, your plan may send a statement to the policyholder — for example a parent or spouse — listing the visit, lab tests or medicine. To keep this off your plan, choose the cash price and pay for lab tests and medicine yourself. You can also ask us not to share care you've paid for in full with your plan, and ask your plan to send its mail to a different address.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
