Short answer

Can I start HIV PrEP through an online visit in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. PrEP greatly lowers your chance of getting HIV. A clinician reviews your risk and labs and, if appropriate, prescribes PrEP with regular testing. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. If labs are needed, your clinician usually orders the Infection Screening panel (Hepatitis C, HIV and the hepatitis B triple panel) and Comprehensive metabolic panel, $121, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT, syphilis, billed by the lab), drawn at a Passion Health clinic or any CPL patient service center in Texas; with insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

About the condition

What to know about HIV PrEP

HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medicine that people without HIV take to prevent getting it from sex or injection drug use. Taken as prescribed, it lowers the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%, according to CDC. It's for anyone at higher risk, such as people with a partner who has HIV or a recent STI.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • You're HIV-negative and want to start PrEP
  • You take PrEP now and want to continue it with your 3-month labs
  • You want an HIV test and advice on whether PrEP fits you
  • You're restarting PrEP after a break or switching from another provider

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • Fever, sore throat, rash, body aches, or swollen glands within a few weeks after a possible exposure Same day
  • You've already tested positive for HIV — HIV treatment is handled by an infectious disease specialist Within days
  • Fever with pain in your side or back Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • Possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours — you need PEP, not PrEP, and it must start fast: go to an emergency room now
  • You were sexually assaulted. Go to an emergency room for a sexual assault (SANE) exam and medicine to prevent infection; 24/7 support: 800-656-4673
  • Sudden pain or swelling in a testicle
  • You can't urinate at all
  • Pregnant, with pelvic pain or bleeding

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

How it works

How your HIV PrEP visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the HIV PrEP intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • A negative lab HIV test from the past 7 days before you start or restart PrEP — a home test alone isn't enough — then an HIV test about every 3 months while you take PrEP pills. If you've had sex without a condom or shared needles in the past 4 weeks, an HIV RNA (viral load) test is added
  • Kidney function, hepatitis B, and STI tests on the schedule your PrEP plan calls for
  • A daily PrEP pill, if appropriate; your clinician can also explain long-acting PrEP injections, which are given at clinic visits
  • Hepatitis B vaccination if you're not immune, and advice on condoms to lower the risk of other STIs
  • A referral to an infectious disease specialist if a test shows HIV

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends HIV, kidney, hepatitis B, or STI tests, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas — HIV tests about every 3 months while you take PrEP.

How much does an online HIV PrEP visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs your clinician orders are priced through Passion Health Blood Work if you self-pay, or billed to your plan directly by the lab (CPL) if you use insurance; imaging is billed by the imaging center and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

While you take PrEP, you'll have an HIV test and check-in about every 3 months before each renewal, with kidney and STI tests on the schedule your clinician sets.

Labs your clinician may order

Priced through Passion Health Blood Work

HIV, hepatitis B and C, and kidney function are required before and during PrEP. Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis tests are run and billed by the lab. Ordered only if your clinician decides it's needed — the visit price never includes a test you don't need.

All Blood Work tests
Infection Screening panelHepatitis C, HIV and the hepatitis B triple panel$109
Comprehensive metabolic panelGlucose, kidney, liver, electrolytes (14 results)$12

Typical self-pay total for the Blood Work tests above: $89 visit + $121 labs = $210

Not included in this total: Chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT, Syphilis (RPR), when needed — run and billed separately by the lab, or to your plan.

Self-pay prices are billed by Passion Health. If you use insurance — including Medicare and Medicaid — the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly for the tests under your plan's lab benefits, and the prices above don't apply. Blood is drawn at a Passion Health clinic in North Texas or at any CPL patient service center in Texas; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Questions

Questions about HIV PrEP care

How much does an online HIV PrEP visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance — most private plans must cover PrEP visits and the required tests with no cost-share, and we confirm your coverage before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For HIV PrEP, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, they're priced through Passion Health Blood Work: for HIV PrEP that's usually the Infection Screening panel (Hepatitis C, HIV and the hepatitis B triple panel) and Comprehensive metabolic panel, $121, through Passion Health Blood Work (plus chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT, syphilis, billed by the lab) (self-pay prices, billed by Passion Health). If you use insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly and those prices don't apply. You can have blood drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth or walk into any CPL patient service center in Texas with a photo ID; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

How long does PrEP take to work?

Daily PrEP pills need about 7 days to build up protection for receptive anal sex, and about 21 days for receptive vaginal sex and injection drug use. Use condoms or other protection until then. PrEP doesn't protect against other STIs, so regular STI testing is part of your plan.

What's the difference between PrEP and PEP?

PrEP is taken before a possible exposure, by people at ongoing risk, to prevent HIV. PEP is emergency medicine started within 72 hours after a possible exposure and taken for 28 days. If you think you were exposed in the last 72 hours, don't wait for an online visit — go to a Passion Health clinic today or an emergency room now.

What happens if I test positive for HIV?

Your clinician contacts you, confirms the result with follow-up testing, and helps you connect quickly with an infectious disease specialist for HIV treatment. Today's HIV medicines let people live long, healthy lives, and keeping the virus at undetectable levels means it isn't passed to partners through sex.

Does insurance cover PrEP?

Most private health plans must cover PrEP medicine, and the visits and lab tests that go with it, with no copay or deductible; some older, grandfathered plans are exceptions. We check your plan first and tell you if you'll owe anything. No insurance? Ask us about programs that may lower or cover the cost of PrEP medicine.

Could someone else on my insurance find out about this visit?

It's possible. If you use insurance, your plan may send a statement to the policyholder — for example a parent or spouse — listing the visit, lab tests or medicine. To keep this off your plan, choose the cash price, pay for lab tests and medicine yourself, and ask the pharmacy not to bill your insurance. You can also ask us not to share care you've paid for in full with your plan, and ask your plan to send its mail to a different address. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE work differently, so ask us before your visit if this matters to you.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
