Short answer

Can I get online care for osteoporosis in Texas?

Yes, for adults 18 and older in Texas. Worried about bone loss or a past fracture? A clinician reviews your risk and DEXA results and plans screening or treatment if appropriate. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. If labs are needed, your clinician usually orders Vitamin D, 25-hydroxy and Comprehensive metabolic panel, $76 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work, drawn at a Passion Health clinic or any CPL patient service center in Texas; with insurance, the lab bills your plan directly. A prescription goes to the pharmacy you choose only if it's appropriate; controlled medicines are never prescribed online. If you have new, severe back pain after a minor fall, lifting something, or even a cough or sneeze, you need to be seen in person today instead (at our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics, or urgent care near you), and you don't pay the online fee. Already a Passion Health patient with insurance? We book you with your own clinician instead.

About the condition

What to know about osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become thin and weak, so they break more easily, often at the hip, spine or wrist. It usually causes no symptoms until a bone breaks. It is most common in women after menopause, but men get it too. Steroid medicines, smoking, heavy drinking and low body weight raise the risk.

Who should get a DEXA scan for osteoporosis?

The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends bone density screening for women 65 and older, and for younger women past menopause who have risk factors such as a parent who broke a hip, smoking or low body weight. For men, the evidence for routine screening is less clear, so they are usually checked based on risks such as long-term steroid use or a fracture from a minor fall. A DEXA scan is a quick, low-dose X-ray of your hip and spine.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • You're a woman 65 or older, or past menopause with risk factors, and haven't had a bone density scan
  • You have DEXA results and want them explained, with a plan
  • You take an osteoporosis medicine and need a check-in or refill
  • You've taken steroid pills for 3 months or longer and want your bone health checked
  • You want advice on calcium, vitamin D, exercise and preventing falls

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • New, severe back pain after a minor fall, lifting something, or even a cough or sneeze Same day
  • You fell or were injured and think a bone may be broken Same day
  • You take an osteoporosis medicine and have new aching in your thigh or groin Within days

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • After a fall you can't stand or walk, or you have severe hip or groin pain
  • A bone looks bent or out of place, or bone shows through the skin
  • Severe new back pain with leg weakness or numbness, or trouble controlling your bladder or bowels

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

Already a Passion Health patient?

If Passion Health is your primary care practice and you have insurance, book this with your own clinician — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan, not just this one problem. Online osteoporosis care is for new patients, uninsured patients and patients outside Dallas–Fort Worth; established patients without insurance pay the $39 renewal rate.

How it works

How your osteoporosis visit works

  1. 1
    Answer the osteoporosis intake

Upload prior results or home readings if you have them.

  2. 2
A clinician reviews it the same day

If labs would help, the order goes to a Passion Health clinic, or to any CPL patient service center in Texas.

  3. 3
    Results go to your clinician

Your clinician reviews them and contacts you with your plan.

  4. 4
    Follow-up on a schedule

Check-ins and repeat labs timed to your condition; 30 days of messaging.

Your care

What to expect from your clinician

What your clinician may consider

  • Reviewing your fracture history, menopause status, medicines, falls and family history to estimate fracture risk
  • A DEXA bone density scan, if appropriate, and blood tests such as vitamin D, calcium and kidney function
  • Calcium, vitamin D, exercise and fall-prevention advice suited to you
  • An osteoporosis medicine, if your scan and risk support it, with a plan for how long to take it

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If your clinician recommends a DEXA bone density scan, you can have it at our Frisco clinic, or at an imaging center near you that your clinician sends the order to.
  • If your clinician recommends vitamin D, calcium or kidney tests, you can have them drawn at a Passion Health clinic or at any CPL patient service center in Texas.
Price & insurance

How much does an online osteoporosis visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs your clinician orders are priced through Passion Health Blood Work if you self-pay, or billed to your plan directly by the lab (CPL) if you use insurance; imaging is billed by the imaging center and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

If you start an osteoporosis medicine, your clinician will set a plan for follow-up labs and a repeat DEXA, often 1 to 2 years after starting.

Labs your clinician may order

Priced through Passion Health Blood Work

Vitamin D and calcium/kidney function before choosing a bone medicine; the DEXA scan is separate. Ordered only if your clinician decides it's needed — the visit price never includes a test you don't need.

All Blood Work tests
Vitamin D, 25-hydroxyFor bone or absorption concerns$35
Comprehensive metabolic panelGlucose, kidney, liver, electrolytes (14 results)$12
Draw and clinician-review fee One per order of single tests; not charged when the order includes a Blood Work bundle$29

Typical self-pay total: $89 visit + $76 labs = $165

Self-pay prices are billed by Passion Health. If you use insurance — including Medicare and Medicaid — the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly for the tests under your plan's lab benefits, and the prices above don't apply. Blood is drawn at a Passion Health clinic in North Texas or at any CPL patient service center in Texas; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

Questions

Questions about osteoporosis care

How much does an online osteoporosis visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Labs and imaging are billed separately. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For osteoporosis, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

I'm already a Passion Health patient. Can I use this?

If you have insurance, we'll book you with your own Passion Health clinician instead — in person or by video, billed to your plan like any visit, with no online fee. Your clinician knows your history and can adjust your whole plan. If you're an established patient without insurance, continuing a treatment we already prescribed uses the $39 follow-up rate; a new problem uses this page's price.

Where do I get labs drawn, and what do they cost?

If your clinician orders labs, they're priced through Passion Health Blood Work: for osteoporosis that's usually Vitamin D, 25-hydroxy and Comprehensive metabolic panel, $76 including the $29 draw-and-review fee, through Passion Health Blood Work (self-pay prices, billed by Passion Health). If you use insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, the lab (CPL) bills your plan directly and those prices don't apply. You can have blood drawn at a Passion Health clinic in Dallas–Fort Worth or walk into any CPL patient service center in Texas with a photo ID; your clinician reviews your results and contacts you.

How often should I repeat a DEXA scan?

It depends on your results and treatment. If you start a bone medicine, a repeat scan is often done 1 to 2 years later to check how you're responding. If your first scan was normal and your risk is low, the gap can be much longer. Your clinician will suggest a timing based on your numbers, age and risk factors.

Do men get osteoporosis?

Yes. Up to one in four men over 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis. Common reasons in men include long-term steroid use, low hormone levels, heavy drinking, smoking and some prostate cancer treatments. Screening in men is usually based on risk factors rather than age alone, so your clinician will ask about your history before recommending a scan.

What's needed before starting a bone medicine?

Before any bone medicine, you need a DEXA scan or a broken bone from a minor fall, and blood tests for calcium, vitamin D and kidney function; low calcium or vitamin D is corrected first. If you have dental work such as an extraction or implant planned, it's best done first. For weekly or monthly pills, you need to be able to swallow normally and sit or stand upright for 30 minutes after each dose. Some bone medicines aren't used if your kidney function is low.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
