About the condition

What to know about swollen ankles

Swollen ankles (edema) happen when fluid builds up in the lower legs. Common causes include long periods of sitting or standing, heat, salty food, pregnancy, vein problems and some medicines, including certain blood pressure pills. Swelling can also signal a blood clot or heart, kidney or liver disease, so it needs an in-person exam and often tests.

Before you start

Who should book a same-day visit

Book a same-day visit if

  • Swelling in both ankles or feet that built up over days or weeks
  • Swelling that started after a new medicine
  • Swelling with heart, kidney or liver disease you already know about
  • Swelling that hasn't gone down with leg elevation and less salt

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call 911

  • Shortness of breath along with the swelling
  • Chest pain or tightness when you exert yourself
  • Racing or pounding heartbeat with fainting, chest pain or shortness of breath
  • An arm or leg that is suddenly cold, pale and painful
  • Blood pressure 180/120 or higher with headache, chest pain, vision change or confusion

Emergency room now

  • One leg suddenly swollen, especially with calf pain, warmth or redness
  • You're more than 20 weeks pregnant and have sudden swelling of your face or hands, a bad headache or vision changes
  • Resting heart rate over 120, or under 45 with dizziness

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. There's no charge for the online safety check. If it tells you to call 911 or go to an emergency room, do that instead of booking.

Questions

Questions about swollen ankles care

How much does the visit cost?

There's no online fee. Your visit is billed as a normal clinic visit — to your insurance with your usual copay or deductible, or as a self-pay clinic visit. Any tests done that day are billed separately — to your insurance, or at the self-pay price shown to you before the test.

Why can't this be done online?

Swollen ankles needs a hands-on exam — and sometimes a test — to be evaluated safely. Rather than charge for an online visit that would end in "please come in", we screen for emergencies and book you straight into a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics. Outside Dallas–Fort Worth, please see an urgent care center or your own clinician.

Why can't swollen ankles be treated online?

Swelling can come from something simple, like heat or a medicine, or from a blood clot, heart failure, or kidney or liver disease. Telling these apart needs a hands-on exam, such as pressing the skin, listening to your heart and lungs and checking your pulses, and often a urine test, blood tests or an ECG the same day. That's why we book you into a clinic.

What can I do at home before my visit?

Raise your legs above heart level when resting, walk regularly, and cut back on salty foods. Don't stop a prescribed medicine on your own, even if you think it's causing the swelling; bring a list of your medicines to the visit instead. If one leg suddenly swells or hurts, or you become short of breath, go to the ER or call 911.

The Texas law behind this visit

This condition needs a hands-on exam to meet the standard of care, so it is booked in person. The standard of care online is the same as in person, and no agency may impose a higher one (Tex. Occ. Code §111.007; 22 TAC §175.2).
