About the condition

What to know about cervical cancer screening

Cervical cancer screening checks the cervix for changes that could turn into cancer. It uses a Pap test, an HPV test, or both, collected during a short pelvic exam. Most cervical cancers are caused by a long-lasting HPV infection, and regular screening from age 21 to 65 finds changes early, when they're easiest to treat.

Before you start

Who should book a same-day visit

Book a same-day visit if

  • You're 21–29 and your last Pap test was 3 or more years ago
  • You're 30–65 and it's been 3 or more years since a Pap test, or 5 or more since an HPV test
  • You're not sure when you were last screened
  • You'd rather be screened at a primary care clinic than wait for a gynecology appointment

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Bleeding heavy enough to soak a pad or tampon every hour
  • Possible pregnancy with pain on one side of your lower belly

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. There's no charge for the online safety check. If it tells you to call 911 or go to an emergency room, do that instead of booking.

Your care

What to expect in clinic

What happens at your visit

  • A same-day visit at a Passion Health clinic, billed as a normal preventive visit — there's no online evaluation and no online fee
  • A check of whether you're due, based on national screening guidelines and your past results
  • A short pelvic exam to collect cells from the cervix for a Pap test, an HPV test, or both, depending on your age and history
  • Your results with clear next steps; if anything is abnormal, your clinician explains follow-up, which may include a referral for a closer look at the cervix
  • A review of other preventive care you may be due for, such as the HPV vaccine if you're eligible

Labs, tests and Passion Health services

  • If you're due for cervical cancer screening, your clinician can also check which other screenings you're due for at the same visit.

Questions

Questions about cervical cancer screening care

How much does the visit cost?

There's no online fee. Your visit is billed as a normal clinic visit — to your insurance with your usual copay or deductible, or as a self-pay clinic visit. Any tests done that day are billed separately — to your insurance, or at the self-pay price shown to you before the test.

Why can't this be done online?

Cervical cancer screening needs a hands-on exam — and sometimes a test — to be evaluated safely. Rather than charge for an online visit that would end in "please come in", we screen for emergencies and book you straight into a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics. Outside Dallas–Fort Worth, please see an urgent care center or your own clinician.

Is cervical cancer screening covered by insurance?

Most health plans cover cervical cancer screening as preventive care, so many insured patients usually pay nothing for the screening test itself. Coverage depends on your plan, your age and how recently you were tested, and other services at the same visit may have a cost. Check your plan, or ask our team to check your benefits before your visit.

How often do I need a Pap test?

For most people with a cervix: ages 21–29, a Pap test every 3 years. Ages 30–65, a Pap test every 3 years, an HPV test every 5 years, or both together every 5 years. After 65, many people can stop if past results were normal. Your history may change this, so your clinician will confirm what you need.

I'm under 21. Do I need a Pap test?

Usually not. Routine screening starts at 21, even if you're sexually active, because cervical cancer is rare at that age and most HPV changes clear on their own, so testing can lead to treatment you don't need. If you're 18–20, you can still book a visit for symptoms, birth control or the HPV vaccine.

Not near Dallas–Fort Worth?

Any primary care clinic, gynecologist, family-planning clinic or local health department can do this screening. If you're uninsured or have a low income, the Texas Health and Human Services Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program may offer screening at low or no cost — call 2-1-1 to find a provider near you. If you've been screened at Passion Health before, we can send your past results to the clinic you choose.

The Texas law behind this visit

This condition needs a hands-on exam to meet the standard of care, so it is booked in person. The standard of care online is the same as in person, and no agency may impose a higher one (Tex. Occ. Code §111.007; 22 TAC §175.2).
