Short answer

Can I get birth control online in Texas?

Yes, for women 18 and older in Texas. Pill, patch, or ring — starting, restarting, or continuing. A clinician reviews your history and blood pressure, with a 12-month prescription if appropriate. Review is by a Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician, 24/7 on weekdays and 7 AM–9 PM CT on weekends. The flat price is $89, or use insurance. Medicines a clinician may consider include norethindrone, drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate-ethinyl estradiol — never controlled medicines, and a prescription is never guaranteed. If you've had a blood clot, stroke, or heart attack, you need an in-person visit within a few days instead, and you don't pay the online fee.

About the condition

What to know about birth control

Birth control (contraception) prevents pregnancy. Pills, the patch and the ring use hormones to stop ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. Combined methods contain estrogen and progestin; progestin-only pills contain no estrogen, which makes them safer for some people, including those with migraine with aura or who smoke after 35. Clinicians match each method using CDC safety criteria.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

A good fit for online care

  • Starting the pill, patch, or ring for the first time
  • Restarting or continuing a method you already use
  • Switching between combined and progestin-only pills
  • You have a blood pressure reading from the last 6 months (home, pharmacy kiosk, or clinic)

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • You've had a blood clot, stroke, or heart attack Within days
  • You've had breast cancer, or you have liver disease or lupus Within days
  • Your blood pressure is high or not under control, or you have no reading from the last 6 months Within days
  • You want an IUD or an implant (these are placed in clinic) Within days
  • You want an IUD as emergency contraception (it has to be placed within 5 days of sex) Same day
  • Any bleeding after 12 months without a period Within days

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Shown so you can plan, not to point you to a pharmacy. Any Texas pharmacy can fill your prescription, and its cash price may be higher or lower. With insurance, your plan sets your cost, and a cash purchase usually doesn't count toward your deductible. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, ask the pharmacy to use your coverage first. Prices change. Passion Health doesn't sell medicine and receives nothing from any pharmacy or drugmaker. A prescription is never guaranteed.

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Price & insurance

How much does an online birth control visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs and imaging, if needed, are billed separately, and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

12-month prescription with refills. Annual renewal with a blood pressure reading (home, pharmacy kiosk, or any clinic).

Questions

Questions about birth control care

How much does an online birth control visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For birth control, Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Do I need a blood pressure reading?

Yes. Methods with estrogen can raise blood pressure and aren't safe if it's high, so we need a reading from the last 6 months. A home cuff, a pharmacy kiosk, or a check at any clinic all work. Each yearly renewal needs a new reading too, so keep a recent one handy.

I get migraines. Can I still use birth control?

Often, yes. If your migraines come with aura — flashing lights, zigzag lines, or other vision changes before the headache — methods with estrogen raise the risk of stroke, so your clinician will consider a progestin-only pill instead. Migraines without aura usually don't rule out combined methods.

What about emergency contraception or an IUD?

Emergency contraception works mainly by delaying ovulation. It doesn't end a pregnancy that has already started, and it isn't an abortion pill. Levonorgestrel (Plan B and generics) is sold without a prescription at any pharmacy and works best within 3 days of sex; it may work less well if you weigh more than about 165 lb. Ulipristal (ella) needs a prescription, works up to 5 days after sex, and works better than levonorgestrel, especially later in that window or at a higher weight — a clinician can consider it at an online visit, if appropriate. If you take ella, wait 5 days before starting the pill, patch or ring, then use condoms for the first 7 days. A copper or hormonal IUD placed within 5 days is the most effective option and keeps working as birth control. IUDs and implants are placed in a clinic — book an in-person visit at any Passion Health clinic (or, if you're not near one of our clinics, we tell you where to be seen near you).

Can I get a birth control prescription online in Texas?

Yes, for women 18 and older. A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews your health history and blood pressure reading, and if the pill, patch or ring is appropriate for you, sends the prescription to your pharmacy. A prescription is never guaranteed.

Is it safe to get birth control online?

It can be. The risks of hormonal birth control depend on blood pressure, migraine with aura, smoking, age and clotting history, which is why the intake asks about them and why we need a blood pressure reading. A Texas-licensed clinician decides whether a method is appropriate for you, and your prescription is filled by the pharmacy you choose.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
