About the condition

What to know about bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of the bacteria that normally live in the vagina: too few protective lactobacilli let other bacteria overgrow. It causes a thin gray or white discharge and a fishy odor, often stronger after sex. BV is the most common vaginal condition in women 15 to 44. New partners and douching raise the risk.

Before you start

Is online care right for you?

  • BV that a clinician has diagnosed before, now back with the same symptoms
  • Thin gray or white discharge or a fishy odor without pelvic pain or fever
  • No new sexual partner or possible STI exposure
  • A plan to prevent BV that keeps coming back

Book an in-person visit instead if

  • Pain low in your belly or pelvis, fever, or bleeding that isn't your period Same day
  • A new sexual partner in the last 3 months, or a possible exposure to an STI Same day

Not near one of our clinics? Online Care is open to adults anywhere in Texas; our clinics are in Dallas–Fort Worth. If the safety questions or your clinician show you need to be examined, we tell you what kind of care you need and how soon — an emergency room, an urgent care center, or a clinician near you. If you've already paid, the full fee is refunded and you get a written summary of your visit to take with you.

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Emergency room now

  • Bleeding heavy enough to soak a pad or tampon every hour
  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Possible pregnancy with pain on one side of your lower belly
  • Possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours (PEP medicine must start fast)
  • You can't urinate at all
  • Sexual assault
  • Pregnant, with pelvic pain or bleeding

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. If screening routes you before you pay, nothing is charged. If a clinician routes you after you've paid, the full fee is refunded.

What these medicines may cost without insurance

Example cash prices for the medicines listed above
Metronidazole 500 mg tablets30 tablets$11.63
Metronidazole 0.75% vaginal gel1 tube$17.14
Boric acid suppositoriesSold without a prescription. For vaginal use only: never swallow it (it is poisonous if swallowed), keep it away from children, and don't use it if you are pregnant.—

Generic prices are mail-order cash prices listed by Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company on October 15, 2026, including its $5.00 pharmacy fee and $5.25 standard shipping. A shorter course costs less.

Shown so you can plan, not to point you to a pharmacy. Any Texas pharmacy can fill your prescription, and its cash price may be higher or lower. With insurance, your plan sets your cost, and a cash purchase usually doesn't count toward your deductible. If you have Medicare or Medicaid, ask the pharmacy to use your coverage first. Prices change. Passion Health doesn't sell medicine and receives nothing from any pharmacy or drugmaker. A prescription is never guaranteed.

Shown so you know what to expect. The reviewing clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate for you — a prescription is never guaranteed, and controlled medicines are never prescribed online.

Price & insurance

How much does an online bacterial vaginosis (BV) visit cost?

Standard evaluation
$89
  • Everything in Quick
  • Lab orders when needed (labs billed separately)
  • 30 days of secure messaging

Using insurance: we're in network with BCBS of Texas, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Humana and Healthcare Highways, and we verify eligibility for every plan before review — you see your estimated cost-share first. New patients have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form. Same-day review applies to self-pay visits; insurance visits begin once we've verified your plan, which is the next business morning if you submit overnight or on a weekend. Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and TRICARE are billed to the program, and the cash rate isn't offered for covered services.

Full refund if your case isn't accepted: if the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card within 10 business days, and we help you get the care you need: a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics or, if you're not near one, clear advice on where to be seen and a written summary of your visit. With insurance, no claim is submitted for the online review. Paying the flat price yourself? You can ask for a written Good Faith Estimate before your visit.

Labs and imaging, if needed, are billed separately, and medication is paid at your pharmacy. Passion Health doesn't sell, ship or mark up medication.

Follow-up

A 48-hour check-in, 30 days of secure messaging, and lab follow-up when labs were ordered.

48-hour check-in; 4+ episodes a year → in-person evaluation and cultures.

Questions

Questions about bacterial vaginosis (BV) care

How much does an online bacterial vaginosis (BV) visit cost?

The flat cash rate is $89 for a standard evaluation, or use your insurance and pay your plan's cost-share — we show you an estimate before review starts. Medication is paid at your pharmacy. If the clinician doesn't accept your case for online care, for any reason, the full fee is refunded to your card.

Will I talk to someone, or is it just a form?

A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews every intake and decides your plan — not software. For bacterial vaginosis (BV), Texas law lets the clinician evaluate you from a condition-specific intake plus your photos and records, and they'll call or video you whenever something needs a conversation. New patients using insurance have a short video visit, because plans pay for a visit, not a form.

Is a prescription guaranteed?

No. You're paying for a licensed clinician's evaluation and plan. Many visits end with a prescription; some end with a different plan, a test, or a referral. Controlled medicines — stimulants, benzodiazepines, opioids, testosterone, sleep aids like zolpidem — are never prescribed at an online visit.

Is BV a sexually transmitted infection?

Not exactly, but it is linked to sex: new or multiple partners raise the risk, and it is less common in people who have never had sex. Male partners don't usually need treatment. BV can make it easier to catch other STIs, so if you have a new partner, testing comes first.

Why does BV keep coming back?

BV comes back within a year for about half of women after treatment, and douching or new partners can play a part. For repeat infections, your clinician may suggest a longer course or a prevention plan. Four or more episodes a year means an in-person visit and testing to look for a cause.

Can I get BV antibiotics prescribed online?

Yes, in Texas, for women 18 and older. A Texas-licensed Passion Health clinician reviews your intake the same day and, if BV is the likely cause and treatment is appropriate, sends a prescription such as metronidazole to your pharmacy. A prescription is never guaranteed, and symptoms that don't fit BV, or that keep returning, are seen in person.

The Texas law behind this visit

A clinician may form a valid patient relationship online using store-and-forward technology — your condition-specific intake, photos and records — paired with a call or video when needed, as long as the in-person standard of care is met (Tex. Occ. Code §111.005(a)(3), §111.007). Your clinician gives you guidance on follow-up care and, with your consent, sends new patients' visit notes to their primary care physician within 72 hours (§111.005(b)).
