A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, the tough band that holds bones together at a joint. Ankles are sprained most often, usually by rolling the foot, followed by wrists after a fall and knees after a twist. Sprains cause pain, swelling, bruising and trouble using the joint, and a break can feel much the same.
Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. There's no charge for the online safety check. If it tells you to call 911 or go to an emergency room, do that instead of booking.

Most sprains improve over 2–6 weeks. If the joint still feels weak or unstable after that, your clinician can plan a recheck or a physical therapy referral.
There's no online fee. Your visit is billed as a normal clinic visit — to your insurance with your usual copay or deductible, or as a self-pay clinic visit. Any tests done that day are billed separately — to your insurance, or at the self-pay price shown to you before the test.
Sprain needs a hands-on exam — and sometimes a test — to be evaluated safely. Rather than charge for an online visit that would end in "please come in", we screen for emergencies and book you straight into a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics. Outside Dallas–Fort Worth, please see an urgent care center or your own clinician.
Telling a sprain from a broken bone depends on pressing on specific bony spots and watching how you walk or use the joint — checks that can't be done reliably from photos. Clinicians use proven fracture rules during the exam to decide who needs an X-ray, which also helps you avoid X-rays you don't need.
Mild sprains often feel better in one to three weeks, while moderate to severe sprains can take six weeks or more, and the ligament keeps healing after the pain fades. Early gentle movement and balance exercises lower the chance of spraining it again. Your clinician will give you a plan for returning to sports and work.
This condition needs a hands-on exam to meet the standard of care, so it is booked in person. The standard of care online is the same as in person, and no agency may impose a higher one (Tex. Occ. Code §111.007; 22 TAC §175.2).
