About the condition

What to know about concussion

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or body that shakes the brain. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, fogginess, trouble concentrating, sensitivity to light or noise, and sleep changes, and they may appear hours later. Falls, sports and car crashes are common causes in adults.

Before you start

Who should book a same-day visit

Book a same-day visit if

  • A head injury in the last few days with headache, dizziness or fogginess
  • No danger signs, but you want to be checked
  • Symptoms that haven't improved after a week or two
  • You need guidance on returning to work, school, driving or sports

Call 911 or go to the ER now if you have

Call 911

  • Slurred speech, weakness, numbness, trouble walking or poor coordination
  • Very sleepy or hard to wake up, or one pupil bigger than the other
  • A sudden, explosive "worst ever" headache
  • New weakness, numbness, trouble speaking or vision loss

Emergency room now

  • A headache that gets worse and won't go away
  • Vomiting more than once
  • You passed out, even briefly
  • Clear fluid from your nose or ears, or bruising behind your ears or around both eyes
  • You're 65 or older and haven't had a head scan since the injury
  • You were hit by a car while walking, thrown from a vehicle, or fell from higher than 3 feet or down 5 or more stairs, and haven't had a head scan
  • You can't remember 30 minutes or more of what happened before the injury, and haven't had a head scan
  • You had a seizure after the injury
  • You had been drinking or using drugs when you were hurt, and haven't had a head scan
  • Headache with fever and a stiff neck
  • A head injury while you take a blood thinner
  • Weakness that is getting worse
  • Numbness in the groin or buttocks, or losing control of your bladder or bowels

Also call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, a sudden severe headache, fainting, a seizure, severe bleeding, new confusion, throat swelling, an overdose or thoughts of harming someone else — and call or text 988 for thoughts of harming yourself. There's no charge for the online safety check. If it tells you to call 911 or go to an emergency room, do that instead of booking.

Questions

Questions about concussion care

How much does the visit cost?

There's no online fee. Your visit is billed as a normal clinic visit — to your insurance with your usual copay or deductible, or as a self-pay clinic visit. Any tests done that day are billed separately — to your insurance, or at the self-pay price shown to you before the test.

Why can't this be done online?

Concussion needs a hands-on exam — and sometimes a test — to be evaluated safely. Rather than charge for an online visit that would end in "please come in", we screen for emergencies and book you straight into a same-day visit at one of our Dallas–Fort Worth clinics. Outside Dallas–Fort Worth, please see an urgent care center or your own clinician.

Why does a concussion need an in-person visit?

A clinician needs to check your balance, coordination, eyes, reflexes and thinking to look for signs of a more serious brain injury and to decide whether you need a scan. That exam can't be done reliably through photos or a form. Seeing you in person also lets your clinician tailor a safe plan for returning to work, driving and sports.

How long does concussion recovery take?

Most adults feel better within a few days to a few weeks. Relative rest for the first day or two, then gradually adding light activity, usually helps more than staying in a dark room. Avoid anything that could cause another head injury until a clinician clears you. If symptoms last longer than a few weeks, your clinician may refer you for more care.

The Texas law behind this visit

This condition needs a hands-on exam to meet the standard of care, so it is booked in person. The standard of care online is the same as in person, and no agency may impose a higher one (Tex. Occ. Code §111.007; 22 TAC §175.2).
