What are physical exams?

Physical exams are a way for you and your provider to understand and maximize your health. These exams include reviewing your medical health and tracking any health changes. The exams include a visual evaluation of your health and recommendations for screenings that could reveal an underlying condition.

Physical exams are also a time for you to ask general health questions and get advice on how to live a healthy life.

Who needs a physical exam?

Physical exams should be a routine part of your annual health care. Even if you feel perfectly healthy, schedule a physical exam. They allow your provider to see you when you’re at your best rather than suffering from symptoms. Your provider can then focus on your wellness rather than an illness.

What happens during a physical exam?

A physical exam usually begins with measuring your basic vitals, including height, weight, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure. The team then evaluates the appearance of your skin and eyes.

Your provider also examines your ears, nose, and throat. They’ll also look for swollen lymph nodes or growths on various body parts. They’ll check your reflexes and muscle tone, too.

You’ll receive recommendations for preventive screenings, like colonoscopies, mammograms, or prostate tests, for certain populations.

You’ll discuss your physical environment and lifestyle and how these factors influence your health. Your provider also reviews any medications or supplements you’re taking to determine if you still need them or would benefit from a change in dose or type.

If you have any immediate concerns or symptoms, raise these at your physical as well. Your doctor can provide insight into treatments, screenings, or at-home care that can help.

How long do physical exam appointments take?

Your entire appointment for a physical exam should take about 15-30 minutes. Your provider may also order additional tests, like blood work, that you’ll need to schedule in the near future.

Follow-up on these additional tests usually happens by phone. You can schedule another in-office or telehealth visit if you prefer.
