Want to manage stress levels even while you’re working? How about getting rid of those annoying headaches? You can even improve your productivity, all just by sitting a little differently. Posture is incredibly vital to your health, and it’s a relatively small change to make day-to-day.
But I work a desk job where I’m sitting all day, how can I improve my posture?
Minor changes to your posture as you sit can go a long way. Try to push your shoulders back and straighten out your spine. Then, shift backward in your chair until your buttocks hit the back of the seat. Try not to cross your legs and relax your overall body while keeping your back straight. Your hips and thighs should be perpendicular to your calves and parallel to the ground.
How about when I’m standing?
When you’re standing, remember to stand up tall, and roll your shoulders back. This will help maintain the natural curve in your back. Pull your stomach slightly inwards. Don’t keep any of your muscles tight or wound up, but don’t slouch. Try to find a happy medium that works for you.
Okay, yeah, I got that part, but why?
Good posture has been proven to have a whole host of benefits, such as improved brain function and energy, reduced risk of musculoskeletal injury, less frequent and intense headaches, and easier breathing. It will also help you digest food easier and faster, even improving your metabolism, which may even help you lose weight. It will strengthen your core, which helps burn more calories as you’re sitting. When you’re using good posture, your body is aligned correctly, so a lot of issues begin to resolve themselves.
