As of April 25, 2025, Texas is experiencing a significant measles outbreak, with 646 confirmed cases—the highest in the nation. The outbreak has also spread to neighboring states, including New Mexico (66 cases), Kansas (37 cases), and Oklahoma (13 cases). Tragically, three deaths have been reported: two children in Lubbock, Texas, and an adult in Lea County, New Mexico.

Impact on Dallas and North Texas

While Dallas has not yet reported a high number of cases, health officials urge residents to remain vigilant. The Texas Department of State Health Services emphasizes the importance of vaccination, especially for children, as the outbreak predominantly affects unvaccinated individuals.

Importance of Vaccination

Measles is a highly contagious disease preventable by the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine. The first dose should be taken at 12–15 months and the second at 4–6 years of age. Adults should ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations, especially if traveling internationally or residing in outbreak areas.
